Posted this in the RB forum then thought the community might enjoy also. These are regarded as some of the finest 5 string basses Fender ever made. Production from 1995 till 2006. A fretless was never offered, the one pictured was built from parts and a neck made by my luthier. The CAR is a 1996, SB 1997, Teal 1998 and Gold 2002.

Interesting pickup polepieces, not unlike Musicmaster's Old Smoothy.

The pickups were designed by the late, great Bill Lawrence. Apparently there is a larger pole piece directly under each string but not visible. One of the cool aspects of the pickups is that Roscoe wanted the neck coil of each pickup in the exact spot of the pickups on his 64' J bass. The single coil position of each mini switch allows only these coils to sound and they are humbucking. Beck wanted this position to sound as close as possible to his J bass and Bill worked the magic. The other positions of the coil switches are series and parallel, all are useful.

    Eh, they're alright ;)

I'd never played or heard one, but was at a jam and a woman had one and WOW- that b string. 100% proof that you don't need 35" scale... The rest of it sounded good too, but I was just blown away as Fender was never known for their low b

Between this and the Victor Bailey, Fender used to actually make pretty nice signature models.

    Those are absolutely gorgeous!!!

Superb....they should never have stopped production on that model...

The fretless would have been awesome...

Beautiful collection. Shoreline Gold always makes me weak in the knees.

Nice! Now you just need to get that weird green Roscoe Beck VI that was floating around for forever.

I got the CAR, Teal and SB in 2000 and 2001. The fretless was completed in 2004. Our own TBer Two Fingers made me a deal I couldn't refuse in Nov 2015 and I got the Shoreline Gold. It and the Teal are my favorites and get the most play time. And, yes, I quite often have weak knees.

Great basses. Used one for years.

  15. Hey guys, exactly how much do these basses weigh? Anyone have a digital weight on any of them? Thanks! Interesting thread! Subscribed!

All the RBV's pictured weigh between 10 and 10.5 lb. Not light but they are perfectly balanced.
