I wanna put either DiMarzio DP123s or Fender Custom Shop 60's pickups in my MIM Fender Jazz. What are the chances of a person screwing up the finish on the bass? Could I do it with a chisel? how much would it cost to have someone do it?
I guess that all depends on you.... how good are you with that chisel? I'm still confused about why these things need to be carved into (the body I mean)... MIM's use two bridge pickups right? That is the big one... the hole routed into the bass for the neck pickup on my MIM jazz bass is about 1inch x 4inches and not at all fit to the pickup... Now the pickguard I can understand (small spacing on the screws) and maybe drilling new holes for the mounting screws... but why the body??
The MIM's use of the same pickup in both positions, but it's not a standard bridge pickup. So you have to remove about 1/8th inch of material from each end of the bridge route. I did both of my cheap basses with a sharp hand chisel. It's easy if you know how to do a little woodwork. I didn't screw up my finish. You also have to file a tiny bit on the pickguard to make it fit the screw-mount protrusions on the DP123's. No biggie. Chris
