Routing on a finished body

Discussion in 'Luthier's Corner' started by topper, Apr 24, 2009.

  1. I need to do some routing on an already painted body. Any suggestions on how to protect the finish?

What I do when I have to do some thing like that is to put about 2 layers of masking / painters tape on the body & same on the routers guide plate.
To hold the template if you use 1 use double side tape to hold it.
Above all go slow & check all of the time, if possible have some one to keep a eye on the template etc.

  3. Do you use the blue painters tape? Is that sticky enough without leaving a residue?

  4. Or cover the body with some heavy paper and tape it down.

i recently added a MM pickup to a harmony p-bass. i just completely disassembled the bass, covered the body in blue painters tape, attached the template with double sided tape, and it worked out great. BTW the bass has a poly finish.
