Is an xlr to instrument plug cable all I need to do this?
Yup. XLR to 1/4" will suffice.
. . . . you may need an low impedance to high impedance transformer. Simple unpowered device, XLR in by 1/4" out. Then, into your pedals. Here's Shure A95UF, there's lots of similar products out there.

If you've already gone through a mixer / preamp / interface / whatever, then you might want a "reamping" adapter to bring line level low z back to instrument level hi z for the effects chain. I use this: Dual RDB – ART Pro Audio
