    Is an xlr to instrument plug cable all I need to do this?

    Yup. XLR to 1/4" will suffice.

    If you've already gone through a mixer / preamp / interface / whatever, then you might want a "reamping" adapter to bring line level low z back to instrument level hi z for the effects chain. I use this: Dual RDB – ART Pro Audio
