Ryhthm sections

  1. Hello, my name is Gary, and I am currently writing a project where I am studying how the drummer and the bass player in a certain band work together and then the same thing for different styles of different bands. I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions of bands I should listen to to hear a really good rhythm section working together. Please e-mail me at thebassmeister@hotmail.com Cheers!

Tony Williams and Ron Carter on Miles' "Live at the Plugged Nickel"?

Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers on "Kind of Blue".

How about Lee Konitz "Motion". Just sax, bass and drums. You get a good sense of the dynamics between Sonny Dallas (bass) and Elvin Jones and Nick Stabulas (drums).

    Euphonic Audio "Player"
Stanley Clarke & Airto Moreira on Chick Corea's "Light as a Feather"

Scott LaFaro & Paul Motian on Bill Evan's "Live at the Village Vanguard"

Stafford James & Lewis Hayes on Dexter Gordon's "Homecoming -- Live at the Village Vanguard"

Geez, how do I get paid to run a study like that?
  5. I've always thought Monty Budwig and Colin Bailey were a very hip (and distinctive) rhythm section (Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" soundtrack album is a great example of their work)...

  6. I've always liked Vince's trio work, too. Ran across an interesting piece online about Vince's bassists and who actually played on "A Charlie Brown Christmas"

  7. Mingus and Dannie Richmond; Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones

Gress & Rainey: Fred Hersch Trio, "Dancing in the Dark" on Chesky records.

Grenadier & Rossy: any Brad Mehldau trio record. Any of the "Art of the Trio" selections are good.
