I'm curious-Whats the deal with adjustable pole pieces? I've never bothered to tweak or adjust them... Can you drastically alter/improve tone by adjusting pole pieces? If so, how does that work? Is there a major difference between adjusting pu height vs. individual pole pieces? Thanks :)

  2. Adjusting the pole pieces alters the volume of the individual strings. Makes some strings louder than others or evens them out. www.has-sound.com

Closer to the string = louder, and vise-versa?

Sort of, but not really. Too close can actually choke the sound. You just need to find the sweet spot. Adjustable poles are nice for balancing out a pickup that is otherwise woofy or bright.
