Well, I did an audition last night, and there was a Sadowsky preamp/D.I. that I used and I'm sold!! It gave my '66 Jazz the boost I liked. Anyway, I've been using a DBX 160a compressor in my rack, and want to know if it's advisable to combine both the preamp and compressor, or should I bypass the compressor? I was a plug and play guy for years so this effects stuff is new to me.

    Many thanks, Tony Noriega, Tampa

No problem to use both, they each serve a different purpose: Sadowsky DI to modify/enhance and boost the tone, and 160A to control dynamics.

Sure, they do different things, but I'd suggest trying just the DI alone and see if you really need the compressor. I tried that several years ago, and never went back (for LIVE use, that is - recording I ALWAYS use compression).
