I think is a good example of wood and pickup placement having a huge impact on the tone of a bass. Long salvaged this bass, which had been underwater, he refinished it and totally replaced the electronics. It still very much sounds like an Alembic to me.

Sounds sort of like an Alembic to me, but not one. Owned a few Series before.

  4. I don't hear the Alembic tone in it but it sounds good. Kent Armstrong pickups are really high quality items (I have some on my Basslab L-Bow, they blow me away). The Alembic tone is all in the filter-based Series electronics. When you turn one of those filter controls and hear the 'wah'. Clearly Johnny has done good work rescuing this bass and it sounds great as it is.

I think the bass still gets a very good Stanley Clarke sort of tone, but a Tone Monster is a long ways from an Alembic filter.
