He isn't in a band, and he'd never performed solo in front of an audience before. And yet the 37-year-old San Rafael resident ended up winning the Bass Extremes International Contemporary Solo Bass Competition, beating top professionals like Boris Kazlov of the Charlie Mingus Big Band and Brazilian virtuoso Zuzo Moussawer.
