I'm going to put together a 4 string Bass from Warmoth and am gathering up stuff. I'm not opposed to the new Ray Ross but the price is too high for me what is the consensus on the schaller 463?
It has a lot of small parts that are easily lost during string changes; even if they aren't lost, losing your setup on the bridge is all but guaranteed. It needs a redesign so the roller shaft is screwed in from the side preventing the loss hazard; that would do nothing to prevent spacing changes though. I wouldn't put one on a bass of mine. The bridges I use have spoiled me. They may not look too good, but their simplicity can't be beat. I recommend, if you decide to use that bridge, go to Schaller and order a couple extra saddles, keep them with your extra strings. 3D-4 - 1 saddle (D, G, E, A) Alternatively, you could epoxy the roller shafts in place.
I like Schaller 3d- bridges. I’ve never had any problems with them. I’d take Schaller rather than tin plate Fender any time.
...and if bought in brass, is nearly as heavy as the Schaller (IIRC within a half ounce.) Along with the captive small parts, that's a win/win.
