school orchestra

    i play bass in my schools orchesta "o yeah 2nd chair" and am wondering if theres anything i can do to the schools basses to make them sound better. i dont really know whatthe problem is they all just sound weak.

    Get your orchestra director to get a reputable shop to do a set-up on them and have the school foot the bill:) It could be anything from string height, warped bridge, cheap strings to just a bad bass...or, a combination of all those factors.

    I'm assuming that you're in a public middle/high school. If your school is similar to how mine was the best advice i have for you is to pray. It's sad but i think it was said here that many schools do not invest the money into the string basses since they can buy new band instruments for the cost of a setup. Weird eh?

    If it's important to you then take the initiative and find a good luthier to at least have an assessment done. If the school doesn't have the money then pay for the repairs, setup or strings yourself. It will make your high school orchestra experience a lot more fulfilling. You could also look into fundraising to get them fixed.
