    Update:

Since the initial posting of this thread there have been false statements made by Jorg regarding what he told me.
Anyone can read what actually transpired here... www.mikewinnen.com/schroedertruth

    ------------------------------------------------
Jorg let me borrow a few cabs (410L, 21012L and a 1212L) to try out. In talking to him via email he told me that all his cabs (both the Regulars and the Lights) are made from “Russian Birch” for the ”lighter weight without losing stability.”

As with all cabinets I try out, I open them up to look at the construction and quality of the build. This is something I have done with Eden, SWR, Ampeg, Bergantino, Accugroove, Epifani, etc…

Well, I am not sure what this is but it is not wood. It looks like pressed paper too me. Like cardboard but thick and solid. There were quite a few pieces all over the inside of each of the cabs including a couple larger pieces. (see pics below)

I did a Google search of Russian Birch and everything shows Baltic/Russian Birch plywood as I thought they would. Nothing I saw on all the sites looks like this stuff. It doesn’t have any thing in it that looks like wood. It also isn't like particle board, MDF or fiberboard.

Look at the pictures below. Sorry for so many pictures (24)but I wanted to be thorough. On the medium sized piece you can actually see the layers of pressed paper separating. Can someone help me out here? If this isn’t wood what is it? Any Schroeder Light users look inside their cabs? Someone please tell me what this stuff is.

Sometime this weekend I am going to go to a couple of lumber retailers to see if they know what this is.

I emailed Jorg about this earlier and have not heard from him at all. Please tell me I am wrong about this!!!. I like Jorg a lot but this doesn't look right to me at all! :meh:

Inside the 21012L - This shows were the caster went into the cab and knocked out the medium sized piece you see later as well as some of the other smaller pieces. That doesn't not look like wood at all to me.

These are the pieces I found inside the cabinets. The medium one came from the area of the caster insert (fits perfectly) and the large one came from the inside of the rear panel (see photos after these). Looks like the screw forced this piece to break off.

Inside one of the back panels where the crossover and connections are. You can see where the large piece came off.

  2. That's interesting. I do not know what that is either. But I am surprised that there are no baffles or internal bracing in there.

That looks like what my dad calls fiberboard. Not sure if that is the "real" term or not.

not as dense as MDF, but similar in appearance and texture when cut/chipped.

    It is not baltic birch.

very interesting. Not what I expected to see inside a Schro either... for some reason i expected shelf braces.

thanks for doing this thread!! This is an eye opener for me!! if you live in a humid climate, you could watch these fall apart right in front of your eyes!! I'd damn near bet, that he is having these made in China, and importing them for assembly!!

I would like to clear something up. I just returned from my facility and responded to Mike via email a.s.a.p. and asked him to contact me with any questions he might have.

First, the cabinets I loaned Mike are my personal cabinets and are completely made out of MDF, which is a very dense material and should not be compared with low cost particle board, etc.
Some known high end manufacturers have been using MDF for years and since I am always looking to improve weight, sound, etc. we also built some cabinets completely out of that material for experiments ONLY.

I'm sure Jorg is going to appreciate you posting those pictures;)

I have wanted to peek inside a Schroeder cabinet...I was expecting something quite different than this.

Edit: And having read Jorg's post above mine, I suspect that I would have found it too...

I thought fiberboard too at first. BUT, in researching it just now I found that Fiberboard has a lot of actual wood fibers and pieces. This has none of that.

As for bracing. I am not sure but maybe with Neo's it isn't necessary? I am not sure.

Whatever this stuff is, it isn't high grade wood.

I just took the rear access off my 1212L and it looks to be made of MDF.

It looks like MDF to me (which, by the way, comes in different densities and hence, different weights) It certainly isn't Baltic Birch.

    Are they light though?

I am on the road right now "literally" but my Treo has internet access so I can look stuff up. I can't get email for some reason though.

My question is why did you tell me they were made from Russian Birch then? I love ya man but I feel a little misled.

Also, for the amount of money these cost (within $50 - $100) of similar Berg's, Accugrooves and Epifani's I would expect high grade wood like the lightweight Italian Poplar that Epifani uses. :meh:

Again, feeling a bit misled. And, why let me try the inferior product???

I did weigh them... Here is what they weighed (on my digital scale so who knows).

    1212L 51.7 lbs.

    21012L 62.2 lbs.

    410L 64.6 lbs.

Mike, personally I think if the thread is going to go down this road, the remainder of your discussion ought to take place via email or phone.

    jsut my 2 cents

I disagree. Besides, part of Jorg and I's agreement was that I was going to right a review of them. I still will. But this part I couldn't sit on as it was really bothering me.

Three days ago from Brian at the Low End. He had it in stock.

I imagine Jorg is regretting letting you borrower cabinets right about now...

Let me ask a question, since you have decided to vet this on a public forum. Why is MDF inferior sonically? What properties does baltic ply have that, if these cabinets were made of it, would make them superior? I don't pertend to be an expert on cabinet construction, I just know what sounds good to me. I would like to understand the issue better.

I do not know either. However, most cabinet manufacturers talk about certain woods for their cabs because of their resonant qualities as well as their strength.

Ask the other cab makers for specifics.

Once again, I expected more from cabinets in this price range. These cabs are in the Boutique price range and should be of similar quality.

Don't get me wrong. I love Jorg but this is just wrong.

I build guitars and sell them. Strings, too
I'll be peeking inside my 410 on Sunday. We'll see what's inside. I just looked at Jorg's site and didn't find any reference to what the cabs are constructed out of.

I have worked with this material. As you can see in the pics, it flakes off in chunks. It is nothing more than pressed paper fibers, with some sort of glue binding it together, pressed in a hydraulic press into a board form. If you look at the panels, you see that they are routed out leaving rounded corners to conserve the strength somewhat. If you saw it, with say a handsaw, it will break apart in chunks. And if it gets wet, you have nothing. I worked with a Behringer cab, made out of this same stuff, and tried to open up a speaker hole a little larger for an Eninence driver. Almost wrecked the cabinet with a jig saw, just opening up the hole a quarter inch. Absolutely the worst cabinet material I have ever seen. They are all 'pin' nailed and glued construction, because a standard wood screw will not work in this material, they will not hold, they will just pull out. Tee nuts are a must for all drivers and any handles.
