Sometime late fall 2003, my friend (& fellow TB'er) 'schuyler' and I decided to design and build a fretless 4 string bass. This is a thread devoted to the progress and completion of that bass, #003.

Schuyler works with wood for his day-gig and has built a beautiful Solid Padauk bodied fretless (completed last October '03, SSW #002):

The neck is really solid, the action is very low and I love the fingerboard radius. The weight is a little on the heavy side, but for the mwah... it's worth it!

Here is the concept drawing that some of you TB'ers might remember from a related thread:

Here are some of the details:

    SSW # 003:

34 inch scale 4 string Fretless Bass
    Cocobolo FB
    Wenge/Purple-Heart/Wenge 3-piece Neck
    Paduak/Wenge/Paduak/Walnut/Paduak/Wenge/Paduak 7-piece Body
Gotoh Tuners/Black 2+2 keys, (Headstock shape TBD)
    Schaller straplocks/Black
    Gotoh bridge/Black
Side Dots and corner lines (unlined on the surface of FB)
    Aguilar OBP-1,
    Vol/Blend/Treble/Bass Knob layout
    Ebony Knobs
    Bone nut
    Pinwheel Truss Rod
    DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups

Can't start progress porn without shots of wood...

Here is the fingerboard, it really didn't look like any other cocobolo that I have seen. Pretty wild, I'm interested to see how it darkens up.

This picture shows the cross section of the Body woods 'sandwich', the three-piece neck woods 'sandwich' and the Paduak that will be used for the front and the back facings.

Another shot of the body laminates (from a different grain angle).

...and finally, all of the wood laid out together.

  3. That Cocobolo board looks sick! Keep us posted, please!

It is just me or does this picture look like a bunch of people standing side by side, and all you see is their legs and pointy knees?

Hey J-raj, it's about time we saw some new pics. When is the estimated due date of this baby?

hmmm... due dates... yeah... hmmm... uh... it should be ready in a few weeks... doing this part time means it's difficult to schedule due dates and the like, but everyone can see it at the ATL Talkbass GTG, certainly.

jairaj pretty much got all the details down. it's a neck through constuction, which may be of interest to some. oh yeah... i'm putting three hairs from jaco's head and one of stanley clarke's fingernail clippings into the finish for that special groove factor. ;)

    josh,

Dang man, long time. Glad to see you here again. I know, we hadn't put much up in a little while... well, we're back!

As for due date, schuyler mentioned that we would really debut it at the ATL GTG to other TB'ers.

...as for clippings and added 'mojo', that's news to me.

Another thing that I forgot to add earlier, the Colobolo fingerboard blank that we selected should have enough length to make a 'ramp' out of, to be placed in between the pickups. I think that would really tie the 'grain' wildness together over the whole instrument a little bit more.

What are creative ways to make this 'ramp' be completely removable?

At the risk of sounding stupid, what is "ATL GTG"?

ATLanta Get-ToGether, sorry about that... There is going to be a 'GTG' here in March (the 21st) with a few TB'ers from this area... You are invited, should you find yourself in this neck of the woods during the third weekend in March.

I know what you mean, Sky and I have been thinking the same thing...

He picked up four cocbolo fingerboard blanks and said I could choose which one I liked... Man, it was tough! There were two slotted (24 fretlines/34 inch scale) and two weren't... Out of all of them this was the wildest, the other three were pretty different from each other as well.

I think that Sky is going to use one of the slotted boards as a fret/fretline jig and one of the other (either slotted or non-sloted) for a five string that he has been dreaming up... but that will have to be saved for another thread.

Couldn't have been put any better... my thoughts exactly!

    Hey y'all,

Sky and I are meeting sometime this week to discuss Headstock Design Concepts. This is the area that I could use some more feed back about. Could you TB cats dig either on your hard-drives or on the net to suggest a cool headstock ideas (or variation of one that might be out there)?

...please do keep in mind that this a 4 string and the tuning keys that I bought are 2+2. Also the headstock is going to be angled slightly back (w/ a volute) and I would like the best 'straight-pull' configuration. Again, I should state 'headstock ideas'... cause Sky and I can't afford legal fees over patent infringement... ;)
