Right now, there are 97 members and 29 guests online. Because of that, I can't use the "New Since Last Login" function. I haven't been able to use it in the past 20 minutes, and it is quite an inconvenience. Is it possible with the forum software, or will it be with the upgrade, during times of high usage to make the search function available to supporting members, or members only? Or make the forum unavailable to the "guests" who also take up a lot of bandwidth? For instance, when there are more than maybe 100 people viewing the forum, the search function only will be available to members or supporting members, or to make it so that guests aren't able to view the forum? It started out as a small inconvenience, but it has gotten progressively worse in the past few months.
Yes, that is the point. There are over 200 members online right now. It took TWO minutes to load the front page of the forum! And I have CABLE!
I think there was some sort of big problem yesterday -I couldn't get on at all for over 4 hours in the afternoon and when I did, I found that I couldn't use the search at all. So - does Paul know what was happening yesterday or is it just a case of TB getting too popular?
It's happening again today and for me it makes TB almost unusable - is there anything we can do about this? I think this needs to tackled as a matter of urgency - I really hope something can be done, as it is very frustrating, just getting that message all day!!
Err... I suppose we could all get on with our work Wulf (knocking off... time to prepare for tonight's gig)
Yeah - I'm off to Brighton Jazz club soon - but it's annoying not being able to see which threads you participated in are carrying on....
maybe when the kiddies go back to school, less non-sense will occur and the usual's will be able to have useful posts. but, who ever listens to me?
Well, Paul did say he was off until the 4th of August, I am not sure how he deals with the usual server type issues by remote control. I suggested in the lounge, and I suggest again that BG OT threads that are NO TOPIC be deleted more aggressively for the time being. I would like to see OT limited to the Lounge, a 'free fire' zone, thus to supporting members only. The freebie OT blogging is excessive. On one thread I did point out that the thread was a total waste of bandwidth, the conversation could have been held on IM. The response I got was, " We talk there too, we do this just to annoy you..." This was from a non supporting member. This must add some strain. Paul noted that the new photo gallery might affect bandwidth as well. We can't measure that, but could that be an issue? Thor
I'm afraid enabling searches for supporting members during overload times, while a great idea, isn't feasible at this point. It'd require a good deal of 'hacking' the current forum software, and since a new version (3.0) is due out soon it wouldn't be a good investment of time... That said, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and I don't think it'll require another $3,000 server hardware purchase like before VBulletin 3.0 is due out soon, and with a database upgrade to MySQL 4.x, the combined optimizations should put the server search back into the fastlane. So if you can, bear with me this summer! I'll be cleaning out OT a bit, hopefully that'll help a little.
I did some tweaking on Aug. 12th on the server to hold us over till the big upgrade. Have searches been going through better since the 12th?
I think so as well. Though generally things have been a bit sticky, even with the high speed cable we have at work.
Yeah... I see the slowdown in the server stats/numbers as well. I'll continue to do what I can - just archived a couple year's worth of Off Topic posts tonight... Hopefully the 'big upgrade' to new software in a few months will help - I'm sure it will. A server hardware upgrade is probably in our near future as well...
I suggest getting rid of OT for other reasons. About 80% of blowups on any of the various boards I've been on for any number of widely varying topics - all happen in the off topic/general discussion thread. At best, it's a waste of bandwidth. I've seen people get in musical instrument discussion on hunting boards, engine rebuilding on musical instrument boards, cooking on political boards. I'm thinking that talkbass is not necessarily the place to get help for doing CV joints, nor discussing the merits of 243 Ackley Improved vs 257 Roberts for deer. (They're sick of it on the hunting board too btw...) Or Ford vs Chevy. I've participated in OT threads before, quite often with regret at having done so. The secret to keeping a well running little fraternity is keeping the topic well constrained. And DEFINATELY - when resources start to get tight - it's time to trim the fat.
