I have been playing a Frankenstein P-bass copy for some time now. Although it has its cheap little quirks I have grown to love it; I'll probably keep it forever. It's my first electric bass (been playing electric for 4 years, double bass for 13). But it's time to move on up. There is a sound that I want and I need to know if there is a bass out there that can give it to me. You see, I've grown to love that passive P bass sound, specifically the upper mids and high's. It's a voice that I identify with, and want at my fingertips. However, I just love the way active low end can just kick you in the gut! When laying a groove, I want to fill the room with pure, heavy, rocksolid, sustaining BASS... and I can't get that out of what I have. So here it is in a nut shell: Organic, passive P bass on top+ fatty-bo batty active bass on the bottom. Is there an answer?
Yikes... I know I might be asking for a lot here, but is there anything under $1000? I really dug that Lakland though. While talking to a guy who builds basses, I was tossing around the idea of a bass with a single coil in the neck and a humbucker on the bridge. Thanks for the suggetions, keep them coming, I'm checking them all out. There was a nice review of the Sandberg PM on the BassPlayer site.

You know, I gave the G&L 1000 a once over and gave it no mind because it appeared to be a "typical" MM Stingray type... but on second viewing I noticed that the pup was closer to the neck than a MM... and passive? Cool. So I take it this model is discontinued? Ah, old stuff sounds cooler anyway. Is there anything else like it out there?
