    I have a bass that doesn't get much action since I got my 5 string StingRay. Lately I've been thinking about selling it to get a Moog Sub Phatty or Minitaur, since I play some stuff that needs bass synth and pedals just don't do it for me. Does this sound reasonable? Or should I invest in something cheaper and keep the It? I can't decide at all. Help!

    I'd go for the Moog. Nothing else can get you the sound.

    My vote's on the Moog. I am biased, as I have one coming (a Minitaur), today.

    I'd vote for the moog, too, but Propellerhead Reason gets outrageous Moog sounds.

    I like knobs (did I say that out loud????????). How are you going to control it? I use a Korg MPK-130. But I really want that Grand piano set (in black). :D

    Just plugged in the Minitaur. Sounds HUGE. PHAT. The wife said: "I can feel that." so, that's a good sign.
    Current setup in thumbs.

    In order to answer this question adequately, one would need to know:

    1) the make & model of bass that you propose to trade;
    2) the genre/style of music that you regularly play;
    3) the approximate value of this instrument relative to that genre/style;
    4) the approximate value of the Moog to that genre/style

    1. It's a USA Standard Fender Jazz
    2. Rock and funk
    3. Can't go wrong with a Jazz, but I also have a Ray
    4. Can't go wrong with Moog, either

    I play Prog, so there's no shortage of material for that genre. I think @Mystic Michael is right, if you have a lot of applications for the instrument, go for it. Playing bass and bass pedals simultaneously is something that I have always imagined doing. That may be why it's coming so naturally to me (and it is). This might be a question for you to consider. Is the pedal route something you have always desired/imagined doing? My particular musical palette needed that Moog sound at my feet. Your palette may not. OK, now I'm off to play more Genesis, Floyd, Yes, ELP, etc.
    Good Luck!

    If you must, but I can tell you from many years experience, you will one day regret having let go of that bass.
    If you can find another way, I would suggest that. (provided it is legal)

    I play with a guy with a bunch of Moogs, all great. I bought his Novation bass station II for a few hundred and I'm having a blast with it. Bass not used, why not flip it for something that would inspire and bring you joy...do it. Through QSC K12's and a KW181....bliss.

    Never had regret on basses but have seen a few Moog's move on that I still miss to the day. Nothing has the sound but Moog. The festival every year in Asheville NC is very cool.

    Actually, there is very good Moog emulation software available for the iPad.

    For me, there's nothing like reaching over (in between notes on the bass) and fine tuning the VCO, or Volume using an actual dial. Moog has great knobs! :thumbsup: (did I say that out loud?)

    Had at my disposal for a while a Moogerfooger, Ring Modulator & A Voyager man those things are cool. I've heard the software and it has gotten worlds better over the years but still it's hard to beat the real thing. Real time tweeks.

    Care to share? I've been using Reason for years and have never gotten a Moog sound I really liked, from it.

    I recently got a Minitaur in a trade. While skeptical at first, this was probably the best trade I've ever made. My synth quest is over. No more screwing with pedals that don't sound that synthy.

    So...I can highly recommend the MT. The Sub Phatty is close to the MT sound, plus you get a keyboard...albeit a slightly cheapo one. With the MT you'll need a controller of some sort. Know that the MT doesn't play higher than C4 (I think it's C4) while the Sub P does. The MT is purportedly bassier.

    All being said, wished I had jumped in to synth gear years ago instead being just a bass guitar player.
