I recently commissioned a "local" luthier to build me a custom. Sent him a drawing to follow, he started on it last weekend, and oh my, he is FAST!

Haha, actually I wouldn't deny that. Interesting part is that we agreed on set neck, and I sent him an image of a Benevante, asking him for a similar heel. Apparently he followed the image down to it becoming neck-thru... :)

I guess, the "unique" thing bout this builder is that he uses wood harvested from this region of the world. Rather than your usual walnut, honduras mahogany options...

Ok, I agree it looks very much like one.

Funny how it look like a Benavente and not Fodera, but people say Benavente's look like Fodera's?

Agree JP, but thats cool, I hope he enjoys the bass!!! Please don't place a "B" on the headstock :D

Actually, the guy runs a guitar building school. I believe they build mostly acoustic guitars. If I am not mistaken, the main luthier is doing up this bass. I dun think he doesn't get enough work :)

  8. jbay, will it stay the color of the natural wood grain or do you have a color picked out?

I asked for a satin transparent brown finish, but now I dunno, might go natural.

The body is figured nyatoh with amboyna top. Neck is some asian species of maple w/ malaysian blackwood laminates and macassar ebony fingerboard.

  13. Very cool bass, man!

What electronics and such are you going with?

  14. That neck looks really wide at the nut. What's the spacing?

It's gonna have Bartolini P4s and an aguilar OBP-3. This one will have 19mm string spacing at the bridge and the nut width is 60mm. :)

  16. Great stuff.

Definitely keep us informed as to how this bass progresses. :)

Just visited the luthier this morning while on vacation in Kuala Lumpur. Got some new pics.

Still awating the Barts before routing.

Unexpected surprise. Free abalone block inlays. They had just recently been glued in. Yet to be flushed.

Another unexpected surprise. Amboyna/ebony laminates on both side of the headstock.

    More pics...

Jeffrey Yong (the luthier) used a large piece of ebony instead of the usual fiber as the laminate between the top & back.

    Here's the amboyna top wet.

I think I'll have this one finished natural after all... :) More pics from touring his workshop later, for now it's back to being a tourist... :)
