Normally I prefer less subdivisions of forums whenever possible, but the fact that the search engine can't search for words as common as "four" and "six" makes finding them rather difficult in the classifieds. More and more users are posting in the classifieds as it is, so just browsing for a six-string bass can be very irriating at this point. I think it would be really helpful to have separate classified forums for each string count (either 4, 5, and 6+, or 4, 5, 6, and 7+). Anyone else feel the same?
I voted no... you handsome fellow you! I play 4, 5, 6 and 7 string basses and have all I need, so I browse the classifieds for 'stuff that peeks my interest' without the need to be separated beyond just being non-URB basses.
I like to browse all my options when looking. I'd rather that we could search more specifically. Not as irritating as people not closing threads for sold items.
That's not going to happen with our search engine though. You can still easily browse through all of the forums if you don't care what you're looking for. Those who are looking for a specific string number though, which most people do, are out of luck as they can't search that out.
I realize that it won't happen but the truth is that this is a band aid to fix a search that isn't very good. It's basically solving a problem in the wrong way. Out of all of the complaints that I have ever heard about the site I think not being able to search for number of strings in the classifieds is new to me. Since 90% are 4 strings, making a whole separate section just for the niche crowd that buys and sells 6 strings seems excessive. Not being able to search for G&L or SUB or items like that is WAY more annoying than what you are describing. Can I assume you are a 6 string player?
Solving a problem in a wrong way is still better than solving nothing, though. Years back we had to take away the ability to search two-letter words without slowing down the site after it got to a certain size. One-letter/number searches will never happen, so I don't dwell on that. And you can actually search for SUB Yes, I'm a six player. But the issue applies to five-string players as well, and that's hardly a niche. The problem is that the classifieds have grown exponentially in popularity and most people bump their threads every 24 hours. So finding a handful of sixes may take browsing back 20+ pages. Introducing two new subforums would not only make finding what you're looking for much easier, but it would relieve some of the overpopulation that comes from putting all the basses in a single forum. The only drawback would be having to pass by two subforums if you're trying to scroll down to the Effects or Accessories forum.
Hellz yeah! Don't see why not. I'd imagine most folks browse the classifieds with some sort of objective and this would definitely help in that regard. I don't play 4s at all so it'd be nice not to have to wade through a ton of them all the time.
I'm looking for some used pickups for a 5-string, and find it a bit frustrating to look at classified ads that are relevant. I suggest considering separate folders/thread for 4, 5 and 6 string pickups under the "Accessories" section as well. Alternatively, could we just adopt a convention for the search engine, like "4string", "5string", etc. If we put a sticky up on the relevant classifieds for such abbreviation conventions, we'd be promoting them for consistent use by members.
