This is just an idea I had when I got the "server busy" message again and again. How about limiting access to members when the server is getting busy? Even as I write this 20% of the people that are browsing here are guests (this is at 3 AM for you us people I guess). This could help us out until there's a bigger/faster server[?], and it might be an incentive for people to sign up.
If TB wasn't sucha valuable resource for guests then I might agree with you, but the wealth of information here, and the demand for that information can be a bit staggering at times. Imagine if you will, being new to bass, and finding this site, all of a sudden any topic you could imagine is at your fingertips, you could spend hours and hours reading posts, and have no need to register. hopefully with these new sponserships paul will be able to afford some more bandwidth.
i definitely agree - members only all the way. it's not that hard to join up, and it doesn't require doing anything but making an id. there are many worthwhile sites that require you to sign up to view posts. i don't have a problem with that here.
Mind you, I'm not talking about limiting to supporting members only. It's no problem to register as a regular member, so you can get in if you REALLY want, even without 20$. It's only the guests that are locked out, and even that only for some minutes in most cases. I know it's no permanent solution to the problem, but it could help to shave off the peaks a little. I used to visit another board where this was practiced in times of server stress, and it worked pretty well.
this isn't a cult...we aren't trying to "get" people so sign up...they are checking the site out as a resource for bass playing...not posting on the forums yup
At this moment 1/4 of the visitors are guests. This would take the edge of the peaks, like said before. There's still need for a bigger server.
I'm in no position to talk, but Paul might be able to get a bigger server if there were more supporting members. I am working on getting the money for it, but at this moment in time, I do realize I am not one.
