I ordered some Nordstrand big singles a while back via amazon. They came with no documentation. So little was explained I had trouble identifying the neck vs bridge pick up! I am about to install them in a bass but i have one last question. I have spent a few hours looking for documentation on how far apart these pickups should be. The website from Nordstrand does not provide info from what I saw. I did a few Google searches that didn't give me any useful info. Does anyone out there know this answer.... or have better searching skills than me? As a last resort I can use pics of basses with the Nordstrand big singles and estimate the distance but I would prefer exact measurements. Thanks to all who help!!!!
contacting the shop? neck vs. bridge = neck pole pieces are closer together than the bridge What distance are you referring to? from the strings? strings pressed down at the last fret = bridge: treble 5/64" bass 6/64" neck treble 5-6/64" bass 7-8/64" All depends in your technique and setup. If you dig hard you might wanna keep them farther
I emailed the company. Thanks for reminding me that is an option. What I am looking for is how far from the bridge do I route the hole for the bridge pick up? Then how far from the bridge pickup do I route the hole for the neck pickup?
oh that it's up to you, what sound you are looking for, wood combo, scale length... very focus ala 24F Sadowsky/Ken Smith etc, classic J, PJ etc.... So many variables!
On my Ibanez Premium the Big Singles are (from center of pickup to 12th fret): neck - 30 cm bridge - 38 cm If you want more of the fundamental, you can put the center at 32 cm or 21.5 cm (neck) Turns out the bridge pickup is already correct, as the fundamental would mathematically be 37.7825 cm from the 12th fret.
Love it!!! Exact numbers thank you!!!!!! Just to double check if I need to do any math, what scale length is you sr premium? Thanks!
The bass i am putting the pickups in is basswood body maple neck. Scale length is 864mm The bass has a surprising amount of growl and I just want to preserve the growl. Should I stick to 38 and 30 from 12th fret? I think I saw a video of a bass where the singles were closer together than 30, 38 and it sounded awesome... but I don't wanna do that and then be disappointed. Any opinions?
You will get more of the fundamental at 32 cm from the 12th fret, but only on open strings. I think all the SR Premiums are 34" & this one surely is. I measured from the 12th fret, because it has monorails, which are all at different distances from the nut. On my Rickenbacker 4004 the neck pickup was where the 22nd or 23rd fret would be, but they also use a 33-1/4" scale. (this would be closer to that 21.5 cm fundamental I mentioned earlier)
