I use a Delta Lab CTM-40 tuner. I just set up my bass and open E,A,D and G are perfectly tuned according to the tuner. I checked them at the 12th fret and my G String is slightly flat. Is this a setup problem or is something else going on or am I worried about nothing?
Not sure exactly what you did but, for the record, I like to match the 12th fretted vs 12th harmonic. Works easily 99% of the time provided all other parameters are within spec including nut slots, relief, and string installation. There are a dozen variations on the theme...find the the approach which works best for your needs. Riis
Zooberwerx, What I did was adjust string length, ensure G was in tune while open and then held down G at the 12th fret to make sure it was in tune. I adjusted string length till the open and fretted G were both in tune.
Not my favorite method but if it turned out favorably, who's to quibble? JOOC, do your 12th fretted and 12th harmonic now match? BTW, you just saved yourself $25-30. Riis
This is where I display my newbness. 12th fretted I know. 12th Harmonic? Not so much. And yes, newbness is a word.
Gently touch (don't press) the string...any string...directly above the 12th fret with one finger / left hand. Now, pluck the string somewhere above the pickups. The resulting tone is the harmonic. You can even remove the finger from the string and the harmonic will continue to ring if done properly. Your tuner will reflect whether your sharp or flat, adjust accordingly. Now, depress the string and play the actual note at the 12th fret. The two should match. Riis
Took a few tries to get the "gently touch" part right, but once I got it right each was spot on. Thanks for the lesson!
