I have a Fender Jazz bass and a 180 watt amp
  2. can you elaborate on "setup"? are you talking about your bass' action, your amp eq, or what?

    Still not getting it...

You mean what GEAR to have (like effects or whatnot)? Or you mean how to set up your action, neck relief, etc?

In any event, metal and jazz strike me as at somewhat crossed purposes; that is, a typical rig/setup for one isn't often going to be really appropriate for the other.

I bet what you're going to wind up with is a really "medium" instrument setup (adjustments) that can go either way by being played differently.

For hardware, perhaps a chorus, a distortion, and a compressor would start you on your way. There's lots more on those in the "Effects" forum...
