okay ... so this may seem like a really simple question but I'm relatively new to bass playing, and was wondering what sort of settings Shavo uses to achieve that distinguishably "Shavo" sound. I'm playing on a Vintage 4-string with active pickups, and through an Ibanez 25 watt Soundwave bass amp. My amp has adjustable settings for Bass, Treble, High Mid, and Low Mid, with the range being from +15 to -15. If anyone knows, then I'd be seriously grateful as Shavo is one of my most influencial bassists. Any replies would be easier if sent to [email protected], but if that's too difficult to manage then just reply straight to this thread. Thanks in advance. EvilInside
Shavo uses Gibson basses, and Ampeg amps and cabs. I'd get new gear. On the first album, he used Ibanez BTB's instead of Gibsons.
well, if you check the album sleave on Toxicity I think he mentions Ibanez and Gibson in his thank yous which means he may have recorded with both. But i could be wrong. He certainly uses the live and in the video, plus on the insert pic on the sleave he's got a gibson
He detunes to a c and plays a pick. when you detune the E string that low, instead of raising the B to a c, it gives it a different sound cause it rumbles so much.
Cheers for the help. Is it a soft pick he uses - it seems to sound better? Also, does anyone know what amp he plays through? I'm maybe looking at getting either a new bass or a new amp ... something new and shiny ... or not shiny cause i want a stained oil bass but hey, you know what i'm saying. Oh, does anyone know if Peavey basses are any good? I was looking at the Peavey A5 Dyna Bass at regentguitars.co.uk, and it looks pretty. That's all ... just pretty. It has a thru neck too, though. I shall pretend to know what that is. Ah, yes, one of those thru necks. Erm. you get the picture. Evilinside
In the video for "Chop Suey!" it looked like he had 2 Ampeg SVT classic heads and 2 Ampeg 8x10s. You wont get that rig unless you have around $4000. Sorry!
The Closest I've gotten to his sound was on a fender but i can still give the the amp settings I used, first dont back off either of your pickups, keep the treble on 10 on the bass, on the amp put the bass at 0 mid a -5 and treble at 5, just mess around with that and see where you can get, I also think he uses a soft pick
nowadays he uses ashdown and gibson as far as im awere. if you look around (in the uk anyway) you can find the wee ashdown mini-stack thing for £200 and a thunderbird copy for £100 or even less sometimes. however my valve jr. and thunderbird comes close
In most live videos you can tell he uses Gibson's Firebirds with Ampeg cabs/heads. His gauge must be some really heavy E string (.115?), since it sounds rather floppy and thundering instead of what a B string would sound like.
They're the bass equivalent to the Firebird, called the Thunderbird. As for amps, he last endorsed Ashdown.
