What exactly are the purpose of shims in the neck pocket? Are there any disadvantages from using shims?

Shims can be used to bring the fretboard closer to the strings. (sometimes requiring a nut adjustment) ... also ... to change the angle of the neck to the body (generally to lower actions or correct intonation problems). I've done a little of this kind of thing myself, but recommend leaving these set-ups to a qualified luthier.

It's been said that shims affect the sustain and tone of the instrument. I think that statement is true. However, it varies with the instrument and the quality of work being performed.

    Take care.
