OK, so I still have a week's worth of vacation I have to take this year, or lose it...anyone have any good vacation ideas for a quick getaway? I'm in Texas, somewhat financially-challenged, and need some ideas...anyone got any?

  2. Get a few friends and go backpacking.

I would, but I don't have any...well, none that can take more than a day off. We do have some spectacular scenery in the Hill Country, though! One of my favorite places to be...

(Except one vacation which was expensive but fabulous)

Visit Adrian Garcia and eat Thai...:D

  7. I was going to say Las Vegas as well...it's cheap to fly and stay there. The main expense is any food and gambling that you do, and you can usually find plenty of dinner and drink specials. Heck, you can usually sit on a machine for hours and they'll keep bringing you free drinks in any of the decent casinos.

Camping can be a lot of fun........nah I think I agree more with going to Vegas. You don't have to gamble, there is PLENTY to do there.

Ever consider taking a cruise? IIRC cruise ships leave from Huston regularly. I hear you can get good deals on a trip at the last minute.
I took a cruise a year or so ago, and would like to do it again. It was the most relaxing vacation I've ever had.

EDIT: My bad, looks like it's Galveston, but it's still close.

Uber expensive if you don't already have the gear.

Cruises can be a great bargain if you find a good deal on one. Sometimes they sell for really cheap. You can very easily spend lots of money on booze and gambling on board though if you like those things. And there are cruises out of Texas. My wife and I have cruised twice and we love it. They include your lodging, many activities, all your (relly good) food. All you have to pay for is off-shore excursions, booze and soda, some on-board activities like bingo.

Funny, my GF and I just took a cruise, a week-long on Conquest, a couple months ago! Had a great time too! The tab was $678 onboard, and that's after we brought a bunch of booze! I got to play with the band two nights in a row as well- not one or two songs, but whole sets! What a blast! The balcony cabin we had was $1400, so it was a total of $2k. Not bad, considering that was booked months in advance. Worked out to be $142 and change per person, per day.

Good idea, though. A friend of mine walked up to the terminal a few months ago, on the day of sailing, and finagled a $99 cabin on a 4-nighter on the Ecstasy (they had some unsold cabins). Wish I could get a deal like that. He had packed a bathing suit, some shorts and T-shirts, and had it all in a gym bag. Rented a tux for formal night, and had a blast! His bar tab was almost $750, plus his GF had to see the doctor onboard after she cut her heel on some coral. It was last-minute divine providence to get that fare, though.

  14. and you already need a vacation??

how about a 5 hour drive to New Orleans? Food is not expensive if you ask locals where to go, and there is a few cheap attractions...
