ok i'm after this bass either the fender or the squier version http://www.reidys.com/index.pl?subm...&utm_medium=Feed&utm_campaign=PriceComparison http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=5147 my question is simple seen as i plan to slap seymours in which ever version i buy and seen as most of my tone comes from bouncing the strings off the frets and the rest from some EQ noodling is it worth shelling out the extra £900 or so for the fender or should i just go with the squier and add a few choice mods (seymour P/U's, badass bridge, fender decal etc)? is there a big difference in necks? is the ash body gonna make that much difference to the tone? are there QC issues? help!! if i dont decide soon my girlfriend is gonna order a new sofa for our living room and i wont be able to buy a bass till she's bought matching curtains and drapes too!!!
I looked at both and bought the squier.I've owned a fender and i think the new squiers are every bit as good, ecspecially if your gonna mod anyway not that anys needed.
I don't own a squier, but the reviews on the forums here have pretty much all praised the squier vintage modified basses. I've played a couple in music stores around here and I like the sound and the feel of them.
thanks for the imput guys i'm leaning towards the squier at the moment what sort of tone does soft maple produce? (bassy middy or trebly?)
I would take the that Squier over that Fender.. I've played both and IMO the Squier is much better. And a hell of a lot cheaper too!
i played both at great length (and the Geddy J, for good measure) and came home with the Fender. it had the best tone an the best feeling neck of the three. there was a big difference in "quality feel" between the Squier and the two Fenders (Fenders felt like they were made better and would stand the test of time; Squier felt less solid). The tone of the Fender blew away all three... growly and rich and fat, it fits perfectly with my style of playing. now, everyone's different, and i'm lucky that i got to try all three before making my decision, but the Fender 1975 reissue is the clear winner to me. all that being said, i love and want to own the whole Vintage Modified series, eventually. those things ROCK for what they are. great bang for the buck... or pound, as it were. also, i've been wowed by the Squier Classic Vibe series lately. great sounding instruments. to me, this Jazz sounds AWESOME, especially for its price: http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~Squier-Classic-Vibe-Jazz-Bass-60s~ID~9342.asp good luck!
The real question here is new or used. New fender may as well be squier unless you spend big bucks. If it were me I would go on a search for a late 80s early 90s fender.
i'm going for a new bass i've had bad experiences with old second hand bass's in the past (mainly rickenbackers though) i think i'm pretty sold on the squier at the moment like i said i'm gonna slap a badass and a set of seymours on it so to buy a fender for the "fender sound" then butcher it to produce "my sound" seems a bit ott
Not much of a fender guy myself but after playing some of there new stuff I was not impressed at all. For the money if I had to choose one it would be a squier.
go for the squier, much better value for money and could potentially play/sound just as good. And fender decal? Trying to hide your insecurities?
I have limited time on both basses, but the Fender feels better in my hands and sounds better to my ears. The difference wasn't huge, though, so if you are sure you are putting new pickups in, I guess I'd go with the Squier.
Heck, if you want to save even more money why not go for this: http://www.rondomusic.com/sjb75ctna.html Even comes with a tort guard and some extra hardware.
I haven't played any "good" squiers, but then again, I've only played on one of the VMs that get rave reviews, and that had terrible (ridiculously loose yet still in tune) strings, so personally I would go fender, but then again, I haven't played all of the available squiers.
I bought a Squier last month after much deliberation. I really like it. But, being a newbie, that doesn't mean squat. But I recently sat down with an experienced bass player who played my new Squier and he could not believe how good it sounded. He said it sounded much better than the Squier he learned on 12 years ago. I think it also depends a lot on the amp you are trying them on. I wish I could afford an American made guitar, but I am very, very happy with the Squier. And for the $250 I paid for the entire starter kit, you can't go wrong.
If you're gonna' mod it.....Squier. Why spend big bucks on something you plan to tear something apart and then put it back together your way? I recently bought two Squiers......a VM Fretlees Jazz and an Affinity Series P Bass. I'm impressed with both. The store had the P tagged at $125 but I traded a bunch of old, unused gear for it with every intention of modding it. So far, I've spent $25 for a gig bag, $35 for a new pickup and $18for a Tort pickguard. It's been a blast modding it. I plan to upgrade the pots and jack next then I'll probably replace the bridge. It sounds and plays as good as my VM Fretless or my Guild Pilot, plus, I think it looks pretty sharp......for right around $200! Before (EMG Selects already installed)........... After (Tort pickguard and EMG Selects installed).........

There is, to my ears and feel, a difference, even if it's not huge, between Squire-Fender MIM-Fender MIA. As price goes up, so does quality. But, the ratio between price and quality is much larger in price than quality. Squires are amazing 300$ instruments Fender MIM are good (depends on model and particular bass) for the money, and good ones are worth the sticker price. Fender MIA are even better, but at 1200$+, they have to be.
