should i consider upgradin my electronics?

I currently have a fender player series p bass (trying to convert it into a pj) and I'm trying to get a kind of germs esq punk tone (lots of punch very aggressive) out of it would you recommend upgrading the electronics (not pickups I'm thinking more the preamp if that makes any sense)? and if so any products I should look into?
