should I go for it?

My friend just brought down a '74 jazz bass from his home and is letting me borrow it for a few days to see if I want to buy it. The finish has cracks in it, but it's a natural finish so you can't tell unless you're up close. The tuners are really stiff and a bizatch to work with. The neck pocket looks like there's a shim on either side to help fill in the gap. The bridge pickup route is too big for the pickup. But man does she play. I put a set of DR stainlesses on it and it was instant Marcus. Question is, should I go for it? Is there anything I should be really worried about? And what's a good price for this bass? The owner is my friend so neither of us wants to rip the other guy off.

Sounds like you really enjoy it, which means you should get it if the price is right, and if it will hold up. Just my opinion, but I don't think the stiff tuners should be a problem, you can fix that with some oil, or at the least, keep 'em that way and they will never get knocked outta tune.

    I been everywhere, man...
    None. At all.
a quick check of www.gbase.com shows them ranging from $1800 to $2300. I think a fella here on TB sold one for $1000 that had some mods done to it.
