Should I use a Dremel to widen a pup route?
All I need to do is route out the screw “bumps” so that I can fit the pup.

  2. Drill press and Forstner bit sounds good to me. That's asking a lot from a Dremel. I've done it, and it wasn't fun.

I'd use one of the Dremel's little sanding drums to do that. You'll want to be very cautious and go slow because if you linger on a spot you'll get divots.

Does it matter if the wood is ash?

Only matters in that the early wood will wear unevenly with the late wood. Just keep a steady hand, go slow, and pay close attention to how the wood is working under the abrasive.
