should I worry about this used strings’ winding?

    hello DBers!

so, I just got some used (3 month old) Spiro weichs in the mail, and it turns out the A is a bit damaged at the nut.. a bit of separation of the winding.

would any of you worry about this breaking unexpectedly? any guesses on how long a string in this condition may last, if so?

I’m fairly new to upright so I’d love to hear any thoughts from some of you more experienced folks, if you have them.

    Thanks!

p.s. the nut is not the issue, the bass has been set up well and has taken several other strings fine.. possible the person I bought them from’s bass.

thats not an issue that i would worry about. i've played on spiros worse looking than that. it does look a little like its pulling to the right a bit. maybe restring it so the string wraps in towards the wall of the headstock ie towards the tuning peg

  4. The nut looks quite wide by the way

Yep, I agree with Sam. Rewind the A string and you will probably be fine.

  6. I wouldn’t worry about the winding at all. The core takes the tension, and like Sam and many others I’ve played hard for ages on Spiros that were literally falling apart.

You’re wrong about the nut. The slots are crooked, poorly cut and don’t hold the strings properly. The poor fit probably won’t cause a string to break...

ah, think it’s mostly the angle of the camera, and the angle of how I wound the strings.. the previous strings never looked so wonky.. thanks for the comment!

The windings are fine but the nut channels look crooked and poorly cut. The nut also looks a bit high
