Just wondering who of you out there owns a pre-CBS (up to 1965/6) Fender J or P. Are they truely the "Holy Grail" of basses? Pics would be appreciated.

[edit]picture is from winter 85/86 as printed in my Senior Yearbook... a bassist for 5+ years at the time and the only music picture that made the cut was me without my bass (the Ibanez Destroyer headstock shows at least)[/edit]

I'ts from age! Both used to be Sunburst. '62 Jazz and '64 P. Headstock is very dark and part of the Fender decal is missing. Went thru the process of getting a new decal from Fender, but don't know if I'll ever use it. Someday both will be refinished "Sunburst" to original.

  11. wow! thats sweet!

has the paint work just crumbled off from play & age?

or did you/past owner have them refinished?

The '62 Jazz was previously refinished in an "ugly" metallic green that was mostly worn off. I refinished it with a light stain and tung oil. The P, I refinished the same way from a beat-up original sunburst. Unfortuneatly, a mistake, from a monetary standpoint. It was done a long time ago. I didn't know any better!

Here is the P-bass I used to own (now owned by my guitar-playin' brother): neck stamp is December 1964. Very light weight, beautiful tone and playability. (Sorry 'bout the crappy pix.)

The first three are pre-CBS; a '58 and two '64's.

  17. Here's my elderly couple... that ol' neck is a sweet slab of ebony!

Edit: forgot to mention... this is a '61 P although I'm told the neck is older (there's no stamp on it unfortunately). Original ashtrays, bridge etc. are still in the case. The Showman is a '64 and the Dual Showman cab has correct JBL D-140Fs - from just after the CBS takeover.
