I got the idea for this thread from a Facebook post from Seymour Duncan. In their forum, they are discussing beater six-strings, so I figure why not post all our beat up basses! What's your backup bass for those not so nice bars, or what you take out when your main player seems to nice for the gig? Here's mine (I have two beaters): First, my SX jazz clone. Not really beat-up, but was cheap enough that if something happened to it I would buy another and move on. My favorite of my cheapies. Here's my third in line. Started life as a SCPB, but the tone was lacking. This bass needed a TON of work to even be playable. Routed for humbuckers, repainted, and leveled the frets. Next step for this one is a defret.
Got this one used, and pre-dropped. Nice crack on the bottom near the jack. 2008 Lakland Skyline Decade. My worry-free bass. Sounds great, too. Shown last weekend, after a 3 hour rain delay.
If the Fender or Gibson are left at home I play SX and Epiphone mostly SX Jazz Epiphone Embassy If I really am worried about an area I am gigging at I bring my sons Silvertone Revolver
My beater, a repainted heavily setup Squier that is now the Orange Jazz Bass. Plays and sounds really awesome and is Orange which I read is the new black?
My current beater. When I'm done with my current project, it gets re-done with some Surf Green love on the body, and amber tint on the neck and headstock. I will also add a bridge cover. I've grown to appreciate the added comfort it provides.
My Fender Aerodyne. It's not a beater in the sense that it's beat up or in bad condition. But, I bought it brand new for $539. At the time I got it, I figured it was kind of expendable and replaceable, compared to my "good basses". I've been playing my Aerodyne for 10 years now, and I couldn't imagine life without it. The "good basses" haven't been to a gig in a long time.
