Shuker Update No.4: All Finished ... Lots of Picture ... Awesome Bass ... !!!

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by ZenBass, Nov 30, 2004.

  1. After a 5 month wait here it is... the thing i have been looking forward to and the best xmas pressie to myself I have had since my GB.

My 5-String Shuker Bolt-on Elite Custom is ready, picked it up on sat and man its one stormer of a bass.

The attention to detail is first rate and equal to that of any builder in the USA. The woods have come up fantastic and the action is quite probably the best I have played, super-lower, a little fretbuzz (cause i like that) and even across all strings with the B-string being defined and not-floopy even thought its only a 34" scale.

The shape is what i always hoped for, me and Jon Shuker designed it to encapsulate his standard design with my view of my perfect bass. As you can see its got more than a hint of Roscoe in there.

    The specs are as follows

    5-String 34" Scale
3- Piece flamed maple body with black pinstripes
    Madrone Burr Front
    Imbuya Burr Back
    5 Piece neck, Flamed maple/wenge/flamed maple/wenge/flamed maple
    ABM Indiviual Bridge
    EMG TW Pickups
    Shuker Circuit - 18v Bass/Mid/Mid Freq/Treb/Pan/Volume
Dip Switch for single coil/ Humbucker switching
    Gotoh GB7 Tuners
    Brass Nut
    Nutrix Locking Jack Socket
    Gloss finish on the body
    Satain on the neck
    Recessed Neck Fixings
    Control Comparments from Imbuya Burr
    Hiscox Liteflight Case
Strung up with Ernie Ball SuperSlinkys

The sound is first rate, endless punchy and clarity, with hi-fi harmonics and slap sound going to old school motown-esq vibe. The neck again is pefectly straight and makes playing so easy

I shall be getting into my home studio to do some recordings for you to hear because its defo worth a listen.

Here are some pictures, a few taken at Jon's workshop.. there are lots but they are relativly small and sorry for the quality. They were taken with a Camera Phone, over xmas i shall get proper pictures taken but here's a (large) taster.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated... so far there is only one design flaw i know off. when slapping the tendensy is to knock the volume pot..which is a bit annoying but...can be easily solved when i tighten the shaft. Unfortuantly when Jon ordered the EMG TW pickups... only one worked. EMG have been very slow with their orders to the UK so atm there is a TW at the bridge and a DC at the neck. A new TW is going to added in Jan along with another Dip Switch.

    Happy Viewing

Congrats, thats a really nice looking bass.

The more I see of Jon's work the more tempted I am to get something of his - he seems to be building some great basses recently.

  3. Nice one! You know what I think about Jon's work, since I own a fretted-fretless pair, not to mention the fretless ABG he and his former partner Marc made me.

birdsg, you really ought to consider a Shuker!
  4. thanks for all ur kind thoughts.. shall be doin some recording 2moz so will upload it so u can hear !!!

Very nice. Is this a UK-based builder and does he have any website that I can view?

    Hey Zenbass

Nice, I may have seen that one.

I was at Jon's workshop last week going through the specs for my custom bass.

He is going to be makeing a singlecut 5 string fretless for me
  9. Hey, be sure to post some pics when you get them. I've never seen a singlecut from Jon; all the Shukers I've seen (including mine) are doublecuts.

    Hey Richard

When I went down he had already been cutting up some singlecut body designs. Mine will be the same and the body shape design is beautiful. very classy, not to big and not too small.

He said he will send me some mockup pics. I'm also going to be going to his workshop to get involved in the building as I wanted to be able to say I have some hand in making it... even if it's just sanding. I also want to do an article on the making of the bass from wood to instrument for my site. I'll post some pics here though when I get them

    Hey Richard

Check Here for an update on the Shuker Single Cut
  17. Sweet!
  18. yeah, it is pretty huge, the pickups are custom from seymour duncan, the neck pickup is a 1/4lb J, and the bridge is MM style

BTW, would you be interested in trading your marleaux for an overwater? if so PM me ;)

Hey how do you think your Shuker compares to the overwater? They are very well made but an aquired taste....
  20. the Shuker and Overwater are pretty much an equal match in terms of build quality and playability. in the electronics department the Shuker wins hands down. but then the electronics in the Shuker are pretty extensive! and a lot of work went into them. the Overwaters preamp doesn't do a great deal to change the sound, but then i think it's designed to add the finishing touches to the tone, rather than make dramatic changes, and it does a great job of that!
