Silly thread ; why does Carrie Fisher have an English accent in some SW scenes?

This always was a "huh?" moment for me.

In some scenes of SW : ANH, Carrie Fisher has an English accent. I'm recalling this from memory, but I vividly remember her having a pronounced English accent in her scenes with Vader and the Empire officer who blows up her planet.

Words like "finger" were pronounced "fingah," etc.

Maybe it's because the accent was rubbing off on her while they were filming in London?

Does anybody know why that happened? Did Lucas want her to speak that way and afterwards didn't care (same as Costner's horrible English accent in the Robin Hood turd he starred in)? :hyper:

  2. Didn't she do some studying and live in London for a fair while?

It could have been that she picked up a bit of a cockney accent that way?

Yes, she does have an accent then it suddenly mostly vanishes. It drives me NUTS! I gather that she originally "interpreted" Leia in one way then changed it early on.
Watch the movie again - she has a pronounced English accent early in the movie especially when speaking with Tarkin(?) Just before he blows up Alderaan with the Death Star (god I feel like such a geek typing this...), right after that, the accent vanishes.

  4. Is it his one:

"Ee, by 'eck, Tarkin, there's a right stink in 'ere. Is it thee, lad?"

You guys are drunk, there's no accent there. Sounded a bit haughty here & there (being a princess & all) but there's a (very) slight difference between haughtiness & a British accent.

    From Wikipedia:

There's where your accent came from, so as she spent more time back in the States it gradually faded. Same thing happened when my brother did a semester abroad in London.

I've never picked up an accent abroad, (spent a few years in Poland and lesser time in France among other places), but I did pick up some sort of bizarre inflection or tone that took me forever to get rid of. Hard to explain but a friend described it as an American accent with British tone. Have no idea exactly how else to describe it but it's long gone now that I'm back in Joisey.

it drives me nuts!, but, I think (bear with me) she is trying to speak to Grand Moff Tarkin in a mocking tone.

When I first read this I thought you said you'd picked up a bizarre infection, lol. That would be another story for another thread.

I think it just sounds "English" to you American guys when the scene calls for more of a stiff or formal style of speech.

If she'd picked up an accent over here that gradually went, then scenes with her Brit style voice would probably be randomly scattered through the movie rather than at the beginning, as most films don't get shot in anything like the running sequence.

You try saying, "I have placed information vital to the survival of the rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit" without sounding like you have a board up your arse.

I think what you are hearing is a Transatlantic accent. Think Cary Grant or Katharine Hepburn.

George Lucas used to make a lot of film nerd wink-wink references. Heck, even Star Wars itself is a spoof on old westerns. I wouldn't be surprised if Carrie Fisher (the daughter of actors from the classic Hollywood era) was brought up around voices like that and/or was asked to do it for the film.
