Singer with the oddest voice

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by Peter Squire, Mar 16, 2006.

  1. Who's your pick?

I know there's gonna be Geddy on here:D

My pick is Jon Anderson. Just such a strange noise emitted from that mans vocal chords.

    Good choice.

I'll put up Jeff Buckley. No one sounds like him.

Myself. Some people can't do the death metal growls the hardcore screams and the emo yells.

Les Claypool would fit the bill.
  6. The bizarreness of Geddy Lee's or Jon Anderson's voice is nowhere near that of Tibetan or Tuvan throat singers. It's like they were born with ring modulators in their larynxes.

  10. When you say odd, do you mean it in a bad way? Most of my favorite singers have odd voices.
These are my favorite odd voices

Mike Patton - holy god the things that man can do with his voice.....

Nils Frykdahl(Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Idiot Flesh) - Half Opera singer from hell, half greatest black metal crooner ever.

Tom Waits - Blues, Booze, and two and a half gravel trucks

Peter Gabriel - Maybe not as odd as the others, but still weird and good

Neil Fallon - The baritone, howling prophet of this nuclear era.

Flo & Eddie - Their harmony falsettos kill me.

As to Jon Anderson , I really like his voice. It has this warm "Old Man" quality to it. Really fits his lyrics.
  11. Diamanda Galas. Now that's a weird voice.

Bjork is another good one, as is Patton. As for the latter, anyone who works with John Zorn has to be both bizarre and a complete genius.
  12. +1 on Dwight Yokam I really love his voice. My favorite country singer.

Also gotta add John Fogherty(sp?) , I love CCR as well.

Marc Bolan from T Rex has a elfish voice. Same goes for the male singer from Comus.
  15. No, I don't mean odd in a bad way. I should have pointed out that I really didn't want this to be a flame war against any particular singer.

Just odd voices - in a good sense. I agree with Bjork, and also what about Toni Childs?
  16. I've always thought that Cher sounded a bit weird.

  17. Bolan sounds so .........seductive. I'm straight, but I do believe I'd kiss Marc Bolan if he sang in that hypnotic sex voice of his. :D
  18. Bolan is basically the canonical Rock Star(tm). All others pale in his presence.

Honestly, now, can anyone touch this?

I'll say Roger Waters. He makes all these dramatic, quasi-operatic screeches and what-not.
