As title says.. sitting in with some of my old "variety" band mates for 6 or so songs tonight. We used to cover a huge range of music from Abba (no, not really, but almost) to ZZ Top. From MJ, to Floyd to Skynyrd to Jason Aldean to... well, you get the idea.
I'm the gui**** tonight.. no bass, as my old bass player was awesome and is playing!!

Along with a couple of other folks we're doing this in memory of our long time former lead singer. We spent MANY hours on stage with JD, who passed away of unknown reasons (officially "cardiac arrest") about 10 days ago. He was 42 (the youngest of us) and left behind a wife and 2 girls aged 12 and 9.

He's the only guy I've ever played with who had a voice that would transcend the variety of styles we played from 2007 to late 2011. We're going to do some of his favorites songs, with no rehearsals/prep. Simply wing them!

I had to yank out my guitar and backup rig (GT10) to do this, as I've played very little guitar over the last 3 yrs... should be fun... but then.. the memories will be tough! :crying:

  2. Hi,

Sorry for your loss. I'm sure you'll pay a great tribute and honor your friend's memory. Take care.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

Thanks Cliff.... It was tough from a memory perspective (as I'm sure you recent memorial gig was) and we played a whole FIVE songs. JD was there in spirit - I'm pretty sure of that because we killed it. The two on the right are members of the hosting band.. and my old bands former bass/drummer. We got up at teh end of their 2nd set and played the following songs:

Keep your Hands To Yourself - Georgia Satellites
Who Says You Can't go Home - Bon Jovi/Jennifer Nettles Duet
Takin' Care Of Business - BTO
    Home - Daughtry
Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty

Sounded pretty darn good for winging it... the other (hosting) bands guitar player came up and wanted to know if he should sit out the rest of the night... LOL!
