Wen buying speakers, do you realyl need to look at the brand to tell the sound, or will a 15 inch speaker always sound like a 15 inch speaker and its the preamp that effects the tone entirely?
  2. You need to hear the speakers. The cabinet tuning makes all the difference in the world.

My current pair of 2x10 cabs get more bottom than I used to get with an 18" and a 4x10 together. So no hard fast rules exist. There's a wide range of 18s that overlap with the 2x15's which overlap with the 4x10's.

And beyond any generalities about "15's go deeper than 10's", the key is what happens in the midrange. Edens have a characteristic bump here, SWR's have one there, and so on. That's the "sound" they're trying to get. You may like it, or not.

Speakers of the same size from various manufacturers will share some sonic characteristics but the total sound will not be the same. Drivers of the same size have a different sound. Cabinets can have any number of different geometries which will affect the sound.

what kinda sound do SWR speakers get?

What brannd/sizes woudl recommend to get plenty of midrange, quite a bit of boom, yet still maintain clarity?
