Sketchy Fender Serial ?

Someone is selling a Fender bass saying it is from mid 1980s. serial # is E 95932. Two things set off alarms. b
1. The serial has just 5 numbers after the E, while all the fender dating resources indicate they should have 6 numbers.
2. The serial number seems slightly off, with the number slightly higher than the letter E. See pic.

The bass is a sunburst with white pickguard. No chance as yet to check the neck heel.

Am I being paranoid or is there something amiss here?

Any thoughts or experience along these lines?

What am I looking at in the above post? Is there a particular source for this? Are you just confirming it’s legitFrom a sourcebook?
