Slap: What am I doing wrong?

Discussion in 'Ask Michael Dimin' started by stinkeister, Sep 4, 2000.

  1. I am a beginner bassist. I admire the style of bassists like flea and bootsy collins, but I can't figure out how to slap. I mean I know that you hit the E and A strings with your thumb, and you pluck the D and G strings with your middle finger. I know how to make percussive tones, but I cant put it together! Every book I see tells me what I already know about slap and then immediately gives me a complex line to start with. I also do practise whenever I can, but nothing works. HELP!

I have an easy exercise for developing slap techinque, that was published in lesson articles in Bass Frontiers magazine. As not to have to reiterate myself, please visit the lessons page of my web site at http://www.michaeldimin.com and check out "5 minutes to slap."

Please let me know how it goes for you.
