For all of you who keep asking, "What bass is good for slapping?":
I was looking at a new compilation CD called "'70s Gold", and right there on the jewel box is a picture of Louis Johnson with his thumb poised over a maple board Gibson Ripper. (Or Grabber?)
See? It doesn't have to be a Marcus Miller Jazz Bass or a Stingray after all, people! :eyebrow:

very true, i have found many good basses with fantastic slap tone, and louis johnson definitely varied his instrumental usage, validly proving your point. my 90's ibanez sr400 has many good slap tones, depending on you pup selection and such, you just know what your getting with the jazz and ray, otherwise it takes some experimenting.

Right, and my major point was: "It's the player more than the instrument."
    (Rant officially over!)
