I was surfing Google trying to find information on the "budget" box cellos and basses marketed to poorer school systems by Scherl and Roth decades ago, and blundered into this: Trench Cello - Royal Academy of Music WWI has long been an interest of mine, especially the British "trench poets"; but some- thing like this I would never have imagined . . .
As the original Royal Academy of Music link is dead, here's a similar instrument: Victorian Military Campaign Collapsible Trench Cello by WE Hill & Sons, London - Jason Clarke Antiques
considering how easy that would be to build, compared to a carved-top cello and assuming the work is being done by a skilled hand, I bet a cello of that sort would better suit many students than some of the "affordable" stuff I see.. i'd love to hear it!!
