slimer neck from 1979 P Bass, new to me

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by chalie, Jul 27, 2012.

  1. Hi,
I had a 1979 Fender Precision bass for few months already and I didn't realized that the neck of this bass is slimmer than few of my other P bass until today.
I noticed that the neck is quite friendly to me since the beginning but didn't pay any attention to it until I measured it. However, it is slightly wider than the Jazz.

Wonder if Fender have the slimmer neck on other production as well or if they go back to the original after 1979.

I don't have the newer model than 1979 of P bass so no idea.

    Thanks for your input.

The original Precision basses had a nut width of 44.5mm. The jazz, with its 38mm nut, became so popular that many players were replacing P necks with J necks. Fender noticed this trend and started making the standard Precision necks 41mm wide at the nut. This is still the standard width today.

  6. Ok. so I shall expect the newer P has a narrower neck.

  7. Thanks Guys
