I posted a thread last week saying that I was pretty dead set on either an SWR Bass 750 or an SM 900. Well, I bought the 900 on Friday afternoon last week. Mars Music in Bloomington gave me a pretty good deal on one, as they are not going to carry the SWR line anymore.

When I tried it out in the store, I thought it was the head for me. But, when I took it to a gig later that night (we had two gigs in the twin cities area on Friday and Saturday), I thought the tone really came up lacking. No matter what I did, I couldn't get a tone that I really was happy with.:(

So, on Saturday morning, I went back to Mars with the head, and told them that I didn't think it was gonna work for me. The salesman told me that he would give me full credit for it, so I tried out a coupla other heads--one of which was the Ampeg.
Immediately upon plugging into the Ampeg, I knew I had to have it. I used it that night, and everyone in the band thought it sounded great. Even the soundguy!

I know there have been a lot of people saying that the Ampeg SVT 4 Pro isn't all that good, and that the power rating is way optimistic. Oh well, that doesn't bother me much, cause I like it.:D I have FINALLY found the tone that I have been looking for. Oh, by the way, I ran it through my Peavey 810tx cab. I sold that yesterday, next weekend I am going to get a couple of new cabs for it. Any suggestions?? I am thinking of possibly a Peavey 410tvx/1x15 BW combination, but am open to trying anything.

Just thought I would share this.

Two recent additions to Ampeg's speaker cab lineup come to mind: the BSE410hlf (which I have) and the BXT410.The BXT is the newest, has cast frame drivers, and costs more ($850). I've tried it out (with an SVT4) and liked it a lot,but I'm happy enough with my BSE to keep it.it cost me $500+tax.

  3. Bloomington huh? Sounds to me like I am not to far up the highway from your Mars Music that you made your return to. Do you have any clue as to what they may want for that SM-900 that you didn't want? Just curious?

    Peace,

Hey Ryan, GREAT CHOISE!!!!!! I love my Ampeg rig. I've heard some poeple say that the BSE-410HLF isn't a good cab, but I have one of these cab @ the store I work @ & I play throught it all the time & it sounds great. I personally own an SVT -410HLF which, IMO, sounds better than the PR-410HLF I compared it to when I bought it.

IMO, you should get 2 BSE-410HLF's & you will have a SUPER KILLER RIG!!!!!!!

Well, I bought it for $1350. I seriously doubt that it'll still be there, though. THis one was their last SM 900, and it sounded like there are no longer gonna be carrying SWR.

Wouldn't hurt to buzz over there and check on it though.

Nino--I will definitely check out those cabs through it when I am down there next weekend. When I tried it out in the store, I ran it through an SVT 810 (not sure which one) and also a SVT 610. I really liked the sound out of both of them, but I am thinking I would rather run either 2 4x10s, like you mentioned, or a 4x10 and a 1x15, mainly for portability reasons.

Thanks for the input, guys. I am gonna be going down to the store with about $1700, and with that I wanna get two cabs, a Korg DTR 1 rack tuner, and hopefully a new wireless unit. Hopefully I have enough $$.;) That way my GAS for a new rig should be satisfied for quite awhile.
