The other day I was at a jazz gig and the upright bass player was smiling up a storm. I was so angry! I should have gone over and read him the riot act! How dare he smile while playing! He knows the rules. If you smile people will think you are having fun. If you are having fun then you are enjoying yourself and that is strictly forbidden. I am deeply concerned that he will set the bar for the rest of us and our band/audience will expect the same!
Oh man, I'm even smiling in my freaking avatar pic. Ok, ok, I'll stop the denial. "My name is Grant and I have fun playing bass"... "Hi Grant" Ah, I feel much better now.
if the bass player is smiling it is either because the drummer has made a mistake, or the bass player themself has dropped a huge fart!
I play in churches. The first couple times I did that, all these women I didn't know started saying hi or smiling at me in the halls between services. I eventually figured out it wasn't that I was a stellar player - it was that I was having so much fun that I was smiling a lot more, which they took as friendly. Smile away!
Most likely, he was smiling because he rigged the ukulele to explode during the ukulele solo. He was waiting for the ukulele solo.
I think you need to take this over to the DB folks, find out who this deviant is and have him shunned from polite society.
I smiled once when I was playing. To this day I still regret it. The worst thing is, it was during a video shoot. So, now I’m cursed with brandishing a fish eating grin on the internet for eternity.
If the club owner sees you smiling, forget about ever getting a raise. Why should we get paid for having fun, right?
