Trying to answer this question is actually what led me find (and then join) Talkbass, so here's hoping you all can help me solve this mystery:

I just bought a used fretless Yamaha BB 400S. Been wanting to get a fretless for awhile, and when I saw this in the shop it just kind of spoke to me. Love the way it sounds, it's in great shape, and it was selling for fairly cheap, so it was a really easy decision to buy.

The store clerk did not know the backstory for this bass, which has made me curious. I'm wondering if any Yamaha aficionados can help me figure out what model year it might be, and whether or not the components are stock or mods. A few pictures below.

I think Yamaha made the BB400S in a fretless, but haven't been able to verify, so it's possible the neck and/or fretboard was added by the previous owner. It also seems like new pickups, and possibly a preamp have been added here. I love this thing whether or not it's a frankenbass, but I'd like to know what's on it, if only so I can look for these type of features for future gear purchases...

No expert here but it looks like an original fretless model. The bridge pick-up and toggle switches have been added...I would take a look under the hood to see what's going on in terms of a preamp or coil taps or whatever is going on.
