Check the Peavey Milestone and Fury models. They are excellent in the price range you listed.

The Fender Deluxe P Bass Special is one of the best bass bargains around...

    Get one and make MUSIC...

I have a peavy milestone and it used to sound good. But now it is making a crusty sound i put new strings on. I think i tis either the cord or the frets.

The Fender Deluxe P Bass Special certainly IS a good bass, but I don't think it can be had for $250. You CAN get a Squier P bass special for about $200. So you might also want to check it out.
Another bass to check out, in that price range...is the Dean Edge. It would hard to find a better bass for the money.

Well, if you'd consider "used" (after all, it'd be new to you, right?:)) you should be able to get a nice MIM P or J Bass.

As far as the Deluxe P-Bass Special, it is pretty much the MIM version of the Hot Rod P-Bass. I love my HR-P, but I was impressed with the P-Bass Special.
