Curious what songs would you recommend for a successful gigging straight up funk/sound/disco dance band?

I envy you guys in the parts of the states where people actually know what funk is. The music culture up here is so NOT funk it's sad.

I'm roots-oriented, so I'd be looking at the Meters and the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, an all those New Orleans cats who informed all the stuff that came after.

I have a friend who has a great gimmick: He starts with a two-chord vamp, then builds a medley of five or six songs, so he goes nonstop for 20 minutes. He gets a good Chicago House thump going, then manages to run "All Along The Watchtower" into "Word Up," "Fly Like An Eagle" and "Brick House" I watched him do it last night, he got people out on the floor like nobody's business. I'm looking for a video.

Do you have a horn section? A band with a good horn section would require a different repertoire from a guitar centric funk band.

For instance: Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" is an awesome dance song with the horn lines. A bit dull without..

  19. You could select a bunch of songs to mash up. Sort of a "Stars on 45" vibe.
