    Hi,

My new bass 'clank' when playing not even hard.

It's not about the sound of the strings/pickups/EQ, it's that my fretted or open string hits and clanks against the next fret above what I am fretting, or maybe against fret #21.

Do I need to raise the strings a little? What is the best solutions?

My bass is a Fender American Deluxe Jazz.

    Thanks,

Take it to a place for a setup. Could be you need to raise the action, or change the neck relief or maybe both. Maybe the nut is cut too deep, who knows. Could even be your type of strings though if I had to guess I'd look at the neck first.

Have you had it set up yet? It may have to much or to little neck relief, in which case a simple truss rod adjustment will fix your problem.

It's much on the E and A string, if that can help.

Problem solved : not enough relief in the neck, and E/A saddle a little too low compare to the other.

Thank you, I good setup is the first thing, in any case, now I'll know!

Wow! My bass play so good now!!!

I can play reasonably hard without clank, with a medium-low action. Perfect for me. And there is a little bit more string tension, just enough to feel it right (Hi-Beam).

  9. Yeah - a good setup makes all the difference - relief, and action work together, but aren't necessarily independant of each other. If you change the string type/gauge - recheck the relief.
