As you will now see by my signature I know have a fretless bass, I juat got it second hand. The strings that came with it are pretty much strings for a fretted bass. I have a funny feeling that these are not the best strings for my bass. I am not very in 'the know' about strings at all, In fact on my fretted bass i still use the factory strings which are probably **** but I aint got no money so there ya go. I do know have a job though and I was think i should probabaly invest in some strings for my fretless. what do you recommend? Thanks
I suggest flatwounds is you're looking for more of a low-end, less-trebley, Carol Kaye/Barney Miller theme type of thump. I prefer nickel flats. If you want flat but bright, go with some stainless or other metals.
thanks a lot. for fretted basses when a versatile sound is required, what sortof string would be reccommened, i dont really have the money to buy and try.
I would suggest a stainless roundwound with a nickel plated outer wrap for a softer feel (and softer on your frets) and tone. You'll be able to shape your tone to accent either the steely punch or the nickel thump. GHS makes a plated steel, as do we, Thomastik-Infeld (Powerbas EB344 for a 4 string 345 for a 5) To save $ go to the superstores like GC or Sam Ash.
