Ok so I’m playing a gig last night. There’s not really a stage at this midsized bar. We are pretty much setup in the front of the room. So patrons are really close to us. This lady (prob in her 50s) leans in between songs and asks me “Why is yours longer?” My reply was of course “What?”. She says “Why is your guitar longer than the other guys guitars?”

I had so many smart a@@ answers in head of course. But I was nice and said “It’s a Bass Guitar. It’s longer because it has to make all the low notes.”

Ive been asked some dumb/weird questions by random crowd people but Geez. That one takes the cake.

Dude! You missed one of the most obvious pickup lines cougars use on bass players!

it still doesn't make a lot of difference (length): it's how you use it! ;)

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that was exactly what she was up to. I would have thanked her for noticing.:D

  6. All jokes aside (and you have to admit the lady gave you plenty of material with that single line) I don't think it's a dumb question, a lot of people likes music ona more casual way and listen to the whole so they don't think about the isntruments and such. Is not how I approach the things I like (I like to know the details) but it's certainly not wrong, I think as musicians we then to forget that.
I remember once I was on a line to buy some tickets for a concert and there was a guy with a double bass on the case and in fonrt of him a really old lady (arround 80). At one point she turned pointed at the double bass and asked the guy with real interest "is that a saxophone?" :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

Anyway, you should thank the woman, not only for showing interest, but for giving you a funy story to tell :p

That's a stretch. Most people would have known the difference, I think.
I've had my DB called a cello many times.

Just say, “if that impresses you, you should see my bass guitar.”

  15. I play a 6 string, so mine's wider too.

I've had plenty of people ask me what bass is when I told them what I play. This stuff isn't important to everyone!

I had a cable installer at my condo not long ago and he saw my basses and asked if I played guitar. I responded that I play bass and that those are bass guitars. He responded in a puzzled voice, "Bass? What's that?"
